Latest Updates from Mattel…

ToyGuru of Mattel took the time to give everyone an update on what’s going on behind the scenes with Mattel’s DC Collector team. He posted the following message on the AFI boards:

Hey gang,

Okay, so I know that Mattel has been a bit absent from the boards lately. To confess, it has entirely been because the whole DC Collector team is hard at work cranking out the best product we can create. And from what we’ve been reading on this website and others you guys are really digging the first batch of figures!

And now that WAVE 1 of the DC Universe Classics figures have hit the shelves, I wanted to update everyone about a few changes on the line.

First off, there has been some concern about the variants for Wave 1. In our efforts to get WAVE 2 out as quickly as possible we had to break a few eggs. One of those wound up being the WAVE 1 variants.

Never fear! We do plan to get these out as soon as possible, but they have not started shipping yet and Mattel will be sure to announce on the boards when they do start shipping to avoid any confusion.

Second, there are a few changes to WAVE 2. Because there was so much demand for both versions of Firestorm, he has been changed from a variant to a running change.

The first half of the WAVE 2 production will be Ronnie, the second half will be Jason. Superman Red/Blue will continue to ship 50/50 throughout the run, and the Aquaman variant will continue to be a chase figure.

WAVE 3 is not changing and will still contain chase versions of Sinestro in his corps uniform and Deathstroke revealed to be Slade Wilson. (about time we stick to our original plan!)

As for the future of the line, it is all in your hands! But I can tell you everyone at Mattel is really excited and proud of the way the line is flying off the shelves! We love hearing your reviews and wish lists and want to continue to work with the fans to make this the greatest DC toy line ever!

Personally I will do my best to participate even more on the boards this coming year. Look for an exciting announcement about the JLU line in the next issue of Toy Fare magazine. After that it is NY Toy Fair where we will have some really great new lines to reveal for the fall of 2008 as well as toys from our upcoming movie properties like Batman the Dark Knight, Speed Racer and Kung Fu Panda. From there we’ll be at NY Comic Con in April and Wizard World Chicago in June to reveal the new waves of DCUC and offer some really cool redeco exclusives.

And of course we will be at the big show, Comic Con San Diego in July with what I think are some of the coolest most fan demanded exclusives ever. I can’t imagine there will be a single disappointed fan when you see what we have in store. (we hope to reveal the exclusives at NY CC in April FYI).

So let us continue to know what you think of the lines and what figures you are looking for and would like to see. Together we will make 2008 the year of the Mattel Action Figure Collector!

Green Arrow please and soon! A Green Arrow wave could consist of: Green Arrow, Red Arrow, Black Canary, Merlyn the Archer and fifth character that could be a “fan favorite.” Maybe Booster Gold? Blue Devil? Blue Beetle (Ted Kord)? You guys choose, I just want a Green Arrow DCUC.

  • Greg L says:

I agree with Danny. I wasn’t planning on getting these figures either, but they look great. I love the grey and blue batman. Green Lantern looks awesome. I can’t wait to get it.

  • Danny says:

Awesome job Mattel!! I wasn’t planning on getting many of these figures and got the whole first wave and want complete 2nd and 3rd waves. Great sculpts and lots of articulation. My only beef. I hate chase figures. WHY? I hate chasing them down. I’d like to see Cyborg superman and modern supergirl given another go. I missed getting them and I’m a supes fan. Looking forward to completing the JLA’s big 7. Can’t wait to see what wave 4 will look like. I better stop I’m rambling now.

  • TimidBlue says:

Every figure in this line looks fantastic! I love the articulation and the sculpts and if they are taking requests for figures, here are some of my favorites:
    Martian Manhunter
Shaggy Man ( how about a Collect and Connect of him? )
    Blue Beetle
    Booster Gold
    Hawkman
    G’Nort
    Kilowog
    Mister Miracle
    Big Barda
    Wonder Woman is a must
    Power Girl
    Adam Strange
How about the Secret Six ?
    Doctor Fate
    Mr. Terrific
    Atom Smasher (collect and connect?)

To be honest, this list could go on and on. This line has me excited about action figures and collecting again.

Keep up the great work Mattel.

  • Tre' says:

TRINITY!!! The horsemen have done Supermen & Batmen up the wazoo. DC’s TRINITY is HOLY in comics. Come on. WONDER WOMAN is essential to this line. No one can or has sculpted & articulated her like The 4 Horsemen could. Don’t make me/ us beg!! PLEESE 🙂

  • dan shaw says:

I luv what I’m seeing so far, growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, I’m really enjoying the retro style especially of the Batman figure!

How about a Dick Grayson, teenage Robin to accompany the Classic Batman?

a purple dress, green capes 70’s style Catwoman would be pretty awesome too

  • Aaron says:

Oh! I was just thinking you know who would really be cool that’s right the GREEN ARROW!

  • Aaron says:

Keep up the good work you guys I look forward to possibly seeing a wonderwoman being done. I would also like to possibly see a John Steweart version of the green lantern beeing done in the future. This is kind of crazy but I think the Question would be cool to. Maybe even the Huntress or Black canary or Vigilante . AHHHHHHHHHHHH! the possibilities are completely endless. Well keep doing your thing. Sorry this is so FREAKIN LONG.

  • Kyle says:

Depending on the TRU, they wait to make spots until they get an item. Walmart wont even carry dc items anymore, to my knowledge. But I’m hoping to add to my comments above with a sort of “figure wishlist” of characters I hope make it out of the DCUC line. There are a lot, but that’s why it’s a wishlist Let me know what you think:

    Batman (Jean Paul Valley)
    Wonder Woman
    Supergirl (matrix)
    GL Hal Jordan (Modern Costume)
GL Kyle Rayner(Ion or recent GL costume)
    GL John Stewart
    GL Guy Gardner
    Parallax (yellow from SC war)
    Huntress
    Joker
    Flash
    Green Arrow
    Red Arrow
    Black Canary
    Donna Troy
    Power Girl
    Zatanna
    Fire
    Ice
    Red Robin (Jason Todd)
    Batwoman
    Captain Marvel
    Mary Marvel
Conner Kent, Clone of Superman (because DC doesn’t own the “Superboy” name right now)

I think this line has a bright future!

  • andy says:

    I love it!
The BAF is the best idea and made me buy the whole wave. keep it going.

Ae you guys planing on doing some 89 Batman movie stuff? i think they will sell good.

  • Scott says:

I know what Mirthquake’s going through — in Rochester NY, one would think these were Target-exclusive…no sign of them at any of the six(!) Wal-Marts or either of the two TRUs! 🙁 (not even a spot for them!)

  • Kyle says:

Also (jeez, I realize this is soon), but a cool figure would be Jason Todd as the new Red Robin, just to round out the batman figures. Maybe a Huntress too…sorry, my mind is rampant right now.

  • Kyle says:

I think the new lines are great, but I’m kinda let down that we don’t get a modern Hal Jordan to accompany the awesome Sinestro Corps version of Sinestro…I know you guys want to stick to the original plan, but is there any way we can get that later maybe? It’s not even a sculpt change, just a paint difference around the waist area. Anyway, can’t wait for the new lines to arrive, as well as find out what’s in store for future lines. Great Work!!!

  • SilverSuperman says:

oh yea and how could I forget Shazam or Captain marvel as a figure, batgirl, supergirl, green arrow, joker, black canary. and for a BAF giant anti-monitor,giganta, atom smasher, doomsday, or darkseid would be pretty sweet.

  • SilverSuperman says:

Awesome Awesome Figs! I say good character choice for the first line, personally I can’t wait until Gl in wave 3. The thing I hated the most about Marvel legends line was the “over articulation” they would stand for a little bit then just slump down or fall over when they felt like it. Keep the joints tight, yet still poseable. Suggestions for upcoming figures, A better superman than just Supes Red/Blue, The Flash, Wonderwoman, and lastly maybe revisit some old “classic” looks like Jay Garrett Flash, Alan Scott GL, etc. More stores need to carry these!!!

  • MegaGearX says:

We need Wonder Woman in Wave 4.

Maybe Cheetah and an Ares BAF (Or Giganta if you really wanna score some points…)

  • Mirthquake says:

I’m with Blisterfists. Blue Devil, please…

And I’m fighting with my local WalMart to get them to carry the DCUC figs… no luck yet though…

Lovin’ the pics I’ve seen though!

  • Lee in MI says:

This line just needs a little more articulation. I agree, some of the MLs had some spinning meat but that can be avoided. The only additional articulation that this line needs is a pivoting ankle and wrist joint. KEEP THE REST AS IS!!!!

Great work Mattel…(did I just say that?)

  • Josh says:

I am extremely happy with how the sets look so far. So hopefully they won’t make 15 versions of the same character like ML did with Wolverine. Keep up the great work!

  • chrishaley says:

I really hope this line keeps to about the level of articulation they’re at currently and don’t let it get out of hand to the detriment of the look of the characters (ie. Marvel Legends).
Don’t get me wrong, I liked the Marvel Legends line, but I’ve preferred the DCSH and now DCUC less articulated, but better looking figures.

  • Juan Manuel says:

Mattel are future planes for JLU, maybe Batman Beyond? I loved this figure, this character. JLU or DCUC please included!!!
Please the market of south america need your atention, in Argentina only twoo Mattel Stores! Actually in Buenos Aires could be find a Barbie Store, the collectors of figures need DCUC Store!!

  • Lee in MI says:

Great news!!! Here’s hoping that thorn in Mattels paw (shipping) is properly removed from their processes.

Can’t wait to get me a Dr. Fate!

Now Toy Guru…any chance on a few minor tweaks to the articulation once this is an established, bona fide sucessful and profitable line for Mattel? I mean with the great hip articulation, you gotta have better ankle articulation for those wide dynamic poses!!! And maybe some more articulation in the wrist. Other than that, I think this is a perfect line and one of the best since Toybiz’s Marvel Legends. You keep producing figs and I’ll will definately keep buying…EVERY FIGURE!

Any two packs in the works down the road?

  • Adan Alakdan says:

Definitely should include DCSH!!!! here’s hopin for a DC Movie Masters FLASH (John Wesley Shipp)!!!

  • Great news, Toy Guru!

You keep makin’ figures I want (Hoping for Blue Devil, both Classic and Modern), and I’ll keep buying!

oh, and I think the site should be expanded to include info on DCSH, as well as the Batman line that preceded DCUC.

  • chrishaley says:

They seem to be doing everything right so far. I hope they keep up the good work.

  • cristain belmar says:

If someone knows that these figures will have international distribution, or even more specifically South America and my country Chile
